How fuel cost is calculated
The whole model is three multiplications, once the units agree:
- Fuel used = distance ÷ economy (or distance × consumption, depending on how your economy is expressed).
- Cost = fuel used × price per unit.
- Cost per mile or km = total cost ÷ distance, the figure that lets you compare cars and routes on a level footing.
The subtlety is entirely in the units. Fuel economy comes quoted four different ways around the world — US miles per gallon, UK (Imperial) miles per gallon, litres per 100 km, and kilometres per litre — and the pump price is quoted per US gallon, per Imperial gallon, or per litre depending on the country. Worse, the two do not have to match: the UK rates cars in mpg but sells fuel by the litre; Canada sells by the litre but sometimes quotes US mpg. Feed a mismatched pair straight into a formula and the answer is nonsense.
The way to get this right — and what the fuel cost calculator does internally — is to convert everything to one canonical pair before multiplying: kilometres for distance, litres for fuel. It uses exact conversion factors from the standards bodies: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres, and 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 litres (that last one is why an Imperial gallon is about 20% bigger, and a “40 mpg” UK car is not the same as a 40 mpg US car). Worked example
Take a 300-mile trip in a car that does 32 mpg-US, with petrol at $3.50 per US gallon. Straight division: gallons used = 300 ÷ 32 = 9.375 US gallons, so cost = 9.375 × $3.50 = $32.81, which works out at about $0.11 per mile.
Now the same 300-mile drive in a UK-spec car rated 38 mpg-UK, with petrol at £1.50 per litre. Here the units genuinely clash — miles and Imperial mpg on one side, price per litre on the other — so the conversion earns its keep. Imperial gallons used = 300 ÷ 38 ≈ 7.895, which is 7.895 × 4.54609 ≈ 35.89 litres, so cost = 35.89 × £1.50 ≈ £53.83. Same distance, a car that looks like it has similar economy on paper, yet a very different bill — because the fuel price, not just the mpg, does most of the work.
And a fully metric case: a 500 km drive at 7 L/100km with diesel at €1.65 per litre. Fuel used = 500 × 0.07 = 35 litres, cost = 35 × €1.65 = €57.75, about €0.116 per km. What moves the number
The pump price — and how much it swings
Of the three inputs, price is the one you control least and that moves the most. Fuel prices track the global oil market, so a geopolitical shock can add 10–20% to a litre within weeks: through 2026, both US and UK pump prices have swung noticeably on Middle East supply worries, with UK unleaded hovering around 160–162p a litre and diesel near 180–184p, and US regular bouncing between roughly $3 and $4 a gallon depending on the month. For a trip weeks away, budget on the higher end of the recent range rather than today’s number, because the price at the pump when you actually fill up is the one that counts.
Your real economy, not the sticker
The mpg or L/100km on the brochure comes from a lab test, and real-world driving almost always falls short of it — often by 10–20%. Cold starts, short trips, a loaded boot, a roof box, heavy traffic and a right foot that likes motorway speeds all cost fuel. The single most accurate figure you can feed the calculator is your car’s own long-term trip-computer average, or a hand calculation from your last few fill-ups — not the number the manufacturer advertises.
Distance and route
Obvious but easy to underestimate: fuel cost scales directly with distance, so a route that is 15% longer costs 15% more fuel, and the “scenic” detour has a price tag. Petrol versus diesel
Diesel typically costs more per litre than petrol, but diesel cars usually go further on that litre, so the cost-per-mile comparison is not obvious from the pump price alone. Unit-of-sale confusion

Common mistakes
Confusing the two gallons. A US gallon is about 20% smaller than an Imperial one. Enter a US-gallon pump price as if it were Imperial, or a UK mpg as if it were US, and your answer is off by a fifth before you start. Match every unit to the country it was quoted in.
Using the brochure mpg. Lab figures are optimistic. If you budget on the advertised economy, the real trip will cost more than your estimate roughly every time. Use your own measured figure.
Treating fuel cost as the cost of driving. Fuel is the marginal cost of a trip, not the full cost of running the car. For a buy-versus-lease or a true cost-per-mile-of-ownership question you need depreciation, insurance and servicing too — fuel is only one line.

A per-trip fuel cost is exactly the right tool for planning a journey, splitting a drive, or comparing two routes. It is the wrong tool for a few adjacent questions worth naming. For a pure electric car, petrol and diesel maths does not apply at all — you need energy in kWh per mile or per 100 km and an electricity price, which is a different calculation.
