How the calculation works

Playback speed is a simple rate multiplier: at 1.5× the audio plays 1.5 times faster, so it finishes in less time. The listening time is just the original length divided by the speed. Time saved is the original length minus that sped-up length. For example, doubling the speed (2×) halves the listening time, and 1.5× cuts it to two-thirds. Speeds below 1× slow the audio down and add time instead. The pitch-corrected speed-up in modern apps changes how fast words are spoken, not the length maths, so the numbers here hold for any app.

Worked example

A 10-hour audiobook played at 1.5× takes 10 ÷ 1.5 = 6.667 hours, or 6h 40m — saving 3h 20m. The same book at 2× takes just 5 hours (saving 5 hours), and at 1.25× it takes 8 hours (saving 2 hours). Across a 40-hour series, switching from 1× to 1.5× turns roughly 40 hours of listening into about 26h 40m, freeing up more than 13 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much time does 1.5× or 2× speed save?

At 1.5× you finish in two-thirds of the time, saving a third — a 3-hour book becomes 2 hours. At 2× you finish in half the time, saving half. The general rule is that the sped-up length equals the original length divided by the speed, so higher speeds save proportionally more, but with diminishing returns: going from 1× to 2× saves 50%, while 2× to 3× only saves a further 17%.

Does faster playback change the pitch or make voices sound squeaky?

Not in modern apps. Audible, Spotify, Apple Books and most podcast players use pitch-corrected time-stretching, so the narrator’s voice keeps its normal pitch and just speaks faster. Only old-fashioned tape-style speed-up raised the pitch. Either way, the length maths is identical — the audio finishes in length ÷ speed regardless of how the speed-up is done.

What playback speed should I use?

It depends on the material and the narrator. Many listeners are comfortable at 1.25×–1.5× for most fiction and general non-fiction, and some go to 2× or beyond for familiar or lightly technical content. Dense, unfamiliar or heavily accented narration is easier to follow slower. Nudge the speed up by 0.1× at a time until comprehension starts to slip, then step back down — that’s usually your sweet spot.

Can I listen slower than 1×?

Yes. Set a speed below 1 (for example 0.75×) and the calculator shows that the book takes longer — the “time saved” becomes extra time added. Slowing down can help with a fast narrator, a foreign-language book you’re learning from, or complex technical detail you want to absorb carefully.

Does listening faster hurt comprehension or memory?

Research suggests most people retain information well up to around 1.5×–2× for straightforward material, with comprehension falling off at higher speeds and for complex content. It’s very individual and improves with practice. This calculator only tells you the time you’d save — whether that speed still works for you is best judged by trying it on a chapter and checking how much you retain.

Does this work for podcasts, lectures and YouTube videos too?

Yes. The maths is the same for any audio or video with a speed control: enter the total length and the playback multiplier to get the sped-up runtime and time saved. Podcasts, recorded lectures, meeting replays and videos all follow length ÷ speed, so you can use this to plan how much of your backlog you can clear in the time you have.
