Area Converter
Convert any area — metric or imperial. Square metres, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles, and the small units (cm², in², mm²) for design and engineering work.
1 Square metres (m²) =
10.76
Converted via 1 m² per m2 and 0.09290304 m² per ft2. Imperial factors derive from 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly (1959 IYPA); 1 acre = 43 560 ft² and 1 hectare = 10 000 m² by definition.
How to use this calculator
Enter a value, choose your starting unit in "From", then pick the target unit in "To". The result updates as soon as you type. Works for any positive area — desktop-scale, room-scale, plot-scale or country-scale.
How the calculation works
Every unit converts via a single intermediate value in square metres. The factor for each unit is exact: 1 yd = 0.9144 m (1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement), 1 acre = 43 560 ft² (statute), 1 hectare = 10 000 m² (BIPM). Squared linear factors give exact area factors with no rounding.
Worked example
1 hectare → acres: 1 ha = 10 000 m², 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m², so 10 000 ÷ 4046.8564224 ≈ 2.4711 acres. NIST SP 811 lists this as 2.471 053 8 acres.
Frequently asked questions
How big is one acre?
One acre is exactly 43 560 square feet, or 4 046.8564224 square metres. Historically it was the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day: one chain (66 ft) by one furlong (660 ft). About 0.405 of a hectare, or roughly 70% of a soccer / association football pitch.
How does an acre compare to a hectare?
A hectare is bigger. 1 hectare = 10 000 m² = about 2.4711 acres. Going the other way, 1 acre ≈ 0.4047 hectare. Hectares are the SI-derived unit used for land in most of the world; acres are still standard in the US, UK, and a handful of former Commonwealth countries.
Why are square units not just the linear units doubled?
Because area scales as the square of length. 1 metre = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 10 000 cm² (100²). 1 yard = 3 feet, but 1 yd² = 9 ft² (3²). Always square the linear factor — a common source of "off by 100×" mistakes.
How many square feet are in a square metre?
A square metre is 10.7639 ft² (exactly 1 ÷ 0.09290304). So a 100 m² flat is about 1 076 sq ft, and a 2 000 sq ft house is about 186 m².
What is a square mile in acres?
Exactly 640 acres. The US Public Land Survey System divided land into 6-mile-square townships of 36 sections, each section being 1 square mile = 640 acres = 259 hectares.
How accurate are the results?
Conversions use the exact NIST and statutory factors and run in full floating-point precision. The display rounds to a sensible number of decimal places for readability — internal precision is preserved for round-trips.
