Board Feet Explained: How Lumber Is Really Measured and Priced
A board foot is 144 cubic inches of wood — the unit that lets one price cover every size of board in the yard. Here is how the count works, why it uses nominal dimensions rather than what your tape measures, how the hardwood quarter system fits in, and a fully priced worked example for a real project.
What is a board foot?
A board foot is the unit that makes lumber prices comparable. One board foot (BF) is 144 cubic inches of wood — picture a slab 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. Because it measures volume rather than length, it lets a lumber yard put one price on wood that comes in every combination of thickness, width, and length. A skinny 1 × 4 and a chunky 2 × 12 can both be quoted "per board foot," and the price signal means the same thing. The unit is a North American convention — it runs the US and Canadian timber trade from the sawmill's log tally to the hardwood dealer's invoice, and it is the unit used throughout the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (FPL-GTR-282), the standard engineering reference for wood. Most of the rest of the world sells timber by the cubic metre instead, but if you buy hardwood in Australia from a US-style dealer, or price walnut on a US website from anywhere, you will meet the board foot. Wholesale, the trade scales it up to the MBF — one thousand board feet — which is how framing-lumber futures and mill price lists are quoted.
How board feet are calculated
The formula is the definition, rearranged:
BF per piece = (thickness in × width in × length in) ÷ 144 BF per piece = (thickness in × width in × length ft) ÷ 12
The two lines are the same equation — the second just accepts the length in feet, which is how lumber is actually sold, and folds the 12-inches-per-foot conversion into the divisor. Total board feet is the per-piece figure times the quantity, and total cost is board feet times the price per BF. That is the whole computation the calculator performs; the subtleties are all in what numbers you feed it.
The big one: use nominal dimensions, not what your tape measure says. A softwood "2 × 4" actually measures 1.5 × 3.5 inches once it has been dried and planed — the dressed sizes are set by the American Softwood Lumber Standard, NIST Voluntary Product Standard PS 20-20 — but the board-foot count is always taken on the nominal 2 and 4. Every price list, mill invoice, and estimate in the trade works this way, and it has even been tested in court: US class actions over nominal labelling were dismissed because the convention is the industry standard. Measure a dressed board and you under-count its billed volume by around 30%.
A shortcut worth memorising: divide the cross-section by 12 to get board feet per foot of length. A 2 × 6 is exactly 1 BF per linear foot (2 × 6 ÷ 12 = 1), so a 12-footer is 12 BF, done in your head. A 2 × 4 is 0.667 BF/ft, a 2 × 12 is 2 BF/ft, and a 1 × 6 is 0.5 BF/ft. Yard workers price long tallies this way without ever touching the ÷144 form.
Worked example: pricing a dining table in red oak
Say you are building a dining table from red oak and your hardwood dealer quotes 4/4 stock at $4.60 per board foot and 8/4 stock at $5.90. Your cut list, translated to nominal dimensions:
- Top: six 4/4 boards (1 in nominal), 8 in wide, 6 ft long → (1 × 8 × 6) ÷ 12 = 4 BF each, 24 BF total
- Legs: four 8/4 blanks (2 in nominal), 4 in wide, 3 ft long → (2 × 4 × 3) ÷ 12 = 2 BF each, 8 BF total
- Aprons and stretchers: four 4/4 boards, 6 in wide, 4 ft long → (1 × 6 × 4) ÷ 12 = 2 BF each, 8 BF total
That is 32 BF of 4/4 (24 + 8) and 8 BF of 8/4 — 40 board feet of oak for the whole table. The money: 32 × $4.60 = $147.20 for the 4/4, plus 8 × $5.90 = $47.20 for the 8/4, so $194.40 of lumber at the geometric count. Now the part the formula does not do: waste. Furniture work in random-width hardwood means cutting around knots, sapwood, and grain you do not like, and jointing away edges — plan on buying 30% extra. That takes the order to roughly 42 BF of 4/4 and 10.5 BF of 8/4, and the realistic budget to about $253. What moves a board-foot count (and its price)
The hardwood quarter system: 4/4, 5/4, 8/4
Hardwood thickness is quoted in quarters of an inch of rough-sawn thickness: 4/4 ("four-quarter") is 1 inch, 5/4 is 1¼, 6/4 is 1½, 8/4 is 2 inches. The board-foot count uses these quarter figures — a 8/4 board counts 2 inches of thickness even though, surfaced on two faces, it will finish around 1¾ in. This is the hardwood mirror of the softwood nominal convention, and it is set out in the National Hardwood Lumber Association rules that govern hardwood grading and measurement in North America. Thicker stock also costs more per board foot, not just proportionally more in volume: 8/4 is harder to dry without defects, so its $/BF rate runs higher than 4/4 of the same species.
Rough tally versus what you take home
Hardwood is usually measured — "tallied" — as rough lumber, in random widths and lengths, before any surfacing you pay the yard to do. If a rough 4/4 board tallies at 6.2 in wide, many yards round the board's footage to the nearest whole or half board foot, per NHLA practice. So the invoice can legitimately read slightly more than your tape-measure arithmetic on the planed board you carry out. It is not a scam; it is the measurement standard, applied before the planer took its bite.
Species and grade
The board foot prices volume, but species and grade set the rate. The same 40 BF order runs a few hundred dollars in red oak, roughly double in walnut, and a fraction in poplar. Grade matters as much: FAS (the top NHLA grade, long clear cuttings) commands a premium over No. 1 Common, which yields smaller clear pieces — fine for a cutting board, frustrating for long table aprons. Comparing $/BF across suppliers only means something when the species, grade, and thickness all match.
MBF: the wholesale multiplier
Mill price lists and lumber futures quote per thousand board feet: $480/MBF is 48 cents a board foot. If you ever price a big framing package, divide the MBF quote by 1,000 and the arithmetic joins up with the retail numbers — a useful check that a "deal" on a bulk order actually is one.
Logs are counted differently
Standing timber and sawlogs are also bought in board feet, but by log rules — formulas like Doyle, Scribner, and International ¼-inch that predict how much lumber a round, tapered log will yield after sawdust and slabs. Doyle, the common one in the eastern US, is BF = (D − 4)² × L ÷ 16 for a log of small-end diameter D inches and length L feet: a 14-in, 12-ft log scales 75 BF. Log-rule board feet and sawn-lumber board feet are cousins, not twins — do not mix them in one estimate.
How to keep a lumber order lean
- Price per board foot, not per board. Two yards selling "$32 walnut boards" of different sizes are not selling at the same price. Convert everything to $/BF before comparing — that is the entire point of the unit.
- Build a cut list before you shop. Group parts by thickness, total the board feet per thickness, then add waste. Shopping from a parts list instead of a guess is the single biggest saving.
- Match the waste factor to the work. 10% for straight-cut framing, 15% for trim, 20–30% for hardwood furniture in random-width stock. Waste allowances are insurance — too little costs a second trip and a delivery fee.
- Buy common grades where they will not show. No. 1 Common at two-thirds the FAS rate is often the better buy for painted work, drawer sides, and short parts.
- Consider the next thickness down. If every 8/4 part will be milled to 1½ in anyway, 6/4 stock (where available, and if it will clean up flat) saves both volume and the 8/4 premium.
Common mistakes
Measuring the dressed board. Feeding actual planed dimensions (1.5 × 3.5) into the formula under-counts a 2 × 4 by about 34% and guarantees your estimate disagrees with the yard's invoice. Nominal in, always. The calculator expects nominal numbers for the same reason.
Length in inches with the ÷12 divisor. The compact formula wants thickness and width in inches but length in feet. An 8-ft 2 × 4 entered as 96 gives 64 BF instead of 5.33 — an error big enough to notice, but only if you know roughly what the answer should be. (Whole-house framing packages run 15,000–20,000 BF; a stud is about 5.)
Confusing board feet with square feet. A square foot measures face area and ignores thickness. They coincide only for 1-inch nominal stock; flooring and panelling are sold by the square foot, dimensional lumber by the board foot. For area-side arithmetic, that is the square footage calculator's territory.
Skipping the waste line. The geometric count is the minimum, not the order. Every defect you cut around, every test cut and mitre drop comes out of stock you did not buy unless you planned it.
When board feet is the wrong unit
Sheet goods — plywood, OSB, MDF — are sold by the sheet or by square footage; count them with the plywood sheets calculator instead. Mouldings and trim with one fixed profile are sold by the linear foot. Firewood is sold by the cord (128 cubic feet, stacked). And outside North America, sawn timber is priced per cubic metre — the conversion, if you need it, is 1 m³ ≈ 424 BF (the exact factor comes from NIST SP 1038's definitions of the inch and the foot).
