A US nickel is the five-cent coin, so its value in dollars is the count times 0.05 — 100 nickels is 100 × $0.05 = $5.00. A standard roll holds 40 nickels ($2.00), and each coin weighs exactly 5 grams, so the pile’s weight is the count times 5 g.

How to use this calculator

Enter the number of nickels you have and the calculator shows their value straight away. A US nickel is worth 5 cents, so the tool multiplies your count by $0.05 to get the dollar value, and also shows the value in cents. It groups the coins into standard 40-coin rolls (each roll is worth $2.00) with any loose coins left over, and works out the total weight, since every nickel weighs exactly 5 grams. Counting a jar? Weigh it instead: divide the grams by 5 to estimate how many nickels are inside.

How the calculation works

The conversion is a single fixed factor. A nickel is the United States five-cent coin, so one nickel is $0.05 by definition. The value in dollars is the number of nickels times 0.05, and the value in cents is the number of nickels times 5. For rolling coins, banks use a standard nickel roll of 40 coins, which is exactly $2.00 — so the number of full rolls is your count divided by 40 (rounded down), and the remainder is the loose coins. Weight uses the US Mint specification of 5.000 grams per nickel; the pounds figure divides the total grams by 453.59237, the exact grams-per-pound factor.

Worked example

Say you have 250 nickels. Value in dollars = 250 × $0.05 = $12.50, which is 1,250 cents. Rolled up, 250 ÷ 40 = 6 full rolls (worth $12.00) with 10 loose coins left over. Weight = 250 × 5 g = 1,250 g, which is 1,250 ÷ 453.59237 ≈ 2.76 pounds. A common jar milestone: 100 nickels is exactly $5.00 and weighs 500 g (about 1.10 lb).

Frequently asked questions

How much is a nickel worth?

A US nickel is the five-cent coin, so it is worth 5 cents, or $0.05. It takes 20 nickels to make one dollar (20 × 5¢ = 100¢ = $1.00), and 100 nickels to make $5.00.

How do you convert nickels to dollars?

Multiply the number of nickels by 0.05, since each nickel is worth $0.05. For example, 60 nickels × $0.05 = $3.00. If you prefer to work in cents, multiply by 5 instead and then divide by 100 to get dollars.

How many nickels are in a roll, and how much is a roll worth?

A standard US roll of nickels holds 40 coins. Because each nickel is 5 cents, a full roll is worth 40 × $0.05 = $2.00. This calculator shows how many complete $2.00 rolls your count makes, plus any loose coins that do not fill a final roll.

How many nickels make a dollar?

Twenty nickels make one dollar, because 20 × 5 cents = 100 cents = $1.00. So $2 is 40 nickels, $5 is 100 nickels, and $10 is 200 nickels.

How much does a nickel weigh, and can I count coins by weight?

A US nickel weighs exactly 5.000 grams according to the US Mint. That makes weighing a fast way to estimate a large pile: divide the total weight in grams by 5 to approximate the number of nickels. A pound of nickels (453.59 g) is about 90 coins, or roughly $4.54.

Is this calculator only for US nickels?

Yes. This tool uses the US five-cent nickel — 5 cents face value and a 5.000 gram weight. Canadian nickels are also 5 cents but weigh 3.95 grams, so the dollar values match but the weight would differ. For other currencies, the coin values and weights are different again.
