How the calculation works
The calculator finds the next birthday anniversary on or after the count-from date: the anniversary in the same year if it has not passed yet, otherwise the anniversary in the following year. The countdown is the number of calendar days (midnights) between the two dates, counted on the proleptic Gregorian calendar in UTC so daylight saving and timezone offsets can never shift the answer. The age being turned is the number of complete years lived plus one — or, on the birthday itself, the age reached that day, with the countdown showing zero. Birthdays on 29 February roll to 28 February in non-leap years, the convention used by every major date library.
Worked example
Date of birth: 15 June 1990, counting from 16 May 2026. The birthday anniversary in 2026 falls on 15 June, which has not yet passed, so that is the target. From 16 May to 15 June is 15 remaining days of May plus 15 days of June — 30 days, or 4 weeks and 2 days, or 720 hours. The birthday lands on a Monday, and with 35 complete years lived (current age 35 years, 11 months, 1 day), the age being turned is 36.

What age will I turn on my next birthday?
The age you turn is the number of complete years you have lived, plus one. Someone currently 35 years, 11 months, and 1 day old turns 36 on their next birthday. On the birthday itself the calculator shows a countdown of zero and reports the age reached that day rather than next year’s age — so on your 36th birthday it says "turning 36", not 37.
Is today included in the days-until count?
The countdown counts midnights between the count-from date and the birthday, which is how people naturally count "sleeps". If the birthday is tomorrow, the answer is 1; if it is today, the answer is 0. The birthday itself is the finish line, not an extra day — so a birthday exactly one week away shows 7 days, not 8.
My birthday is 29 February — what date does the countdown target?
In a non-leap year the countdown targets 28 February, so someone born on 29 February 2000 counting from August 2026 sees a target of 28 February 2027. When the next leap year arrives, the real 29 February is used. This matches the convention in every major date library and the rule recognised by the UK Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953 for Scotland; a few statutory contexts in England and Wales use 1 March instead, but 28 February is the near-universal software default.
What is the largest number of days the calculator can show?
The maximum is 365, which happens the day after a birthday when the coming year contains a 29 February. In an ordinary year, the day after a birthday shows 364 days. The countdown can never reach 366: the gap from one day after a birthday to the next anniversary is always one year minus one day, and even a leap year only stretches that to 365.
Why does my birthday fall on a different weekday each year?
A common year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day, so a birthday advances one weekday from one year to the next — a Monday birthday this year is a Tuesday birthday next year. When a 29 February falls between the two anniversaries, the gap is 366 days (52 weeks and 2 days) and the weekday jumps two places. Over the full 400-year Gregorian cycle each birthday cycles through all seven weekdays.
Can I count down to someone else’s birthday, or from a future date?
Yes. Enter any date of birth and any count-from date on or after it. Counting from a future date is useful for planning — for example, setting the count-from date to the start of a school year shows how far into the year a child’s birthday falls. The count-from date must not be earlier than the date of birth; if it is, the calculator returns an error rather than a negative countdown.
